The Sierra Madre Playhouse is currently hosting the North American premiere of the solo theatrical production One Million Words – Rilke. Created by and starring Brazilian stage and screen veteran Ivo Müller, the show explores the life and internal landscape of the poet Rainer Maria Rilke.
The performance, which launched on April 24, has been praised for its meditative and immersive approach to biographical storytelling. Müller portrays a dual narrative, connecting an actor in the present day with the voice of the poet from the past, as they navigate universal themes of creativity, solitude, and belonging in a fast-paced, often chaotic world. Developed in Brazil and workshopped in New York and Los Angeles, the production serves as a timely antidote to modern digital noise.
By grounding the performance in Rilke’s letters and poetry, Müller provides an intimate, visceral experience that challenges traditional stage conventions. The show’s limited run is a major artistic milestone for the Sierra Madre Playhouse and represents a bridge between international artistic traditions, highlighting the universal power of language to address the complexities of modern human suffering and the ongoing search for quiet reflection
