“House of the Dragon” is back, and it wasted zero time reminding everyone why it’s appointment television. The Season 3 premiere dropped on HBO and Max Sunday night, and within minutes fans were losing it over a scene nobody saw coming: Aemond Targaryen planting a kiss directly on his mother Alicent’s lips.
The moment instantly flooded X and TikTok with disbelief. Viewers zoomed in on Alicent’s visibly unsettled expression, with several clips capturing fans rewinding multiple times to confirm what they’d just watched. One widely shared post described having to “rewind three times” because there was “no way” their eyes had just seen that. Others called it one of the most uncomfortable, unpredictable beats the show has ever pulled off.
Olivia Cooke, who plays Alicent, didn’t shy away from addressing it afterward. She admitted the scene felt “f—ing weird” and explained that her character reads the moment as a kind of personal failure, on top of genuine fear. Since Aemond is, in her words, “a very dangerous man,” she noted that any reaction Alicent gives him from here on out has to be carefully calculated, because the wrong response could put her in real danger.
It’s worth noting this twist isn’t pulled from George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” the book the series is based on, making it an original addition from the show’s writers. The series has flirted with House Targaryen’s complicated, incestuous family dynamics before, but this scene pushes that theme further than ever.
Beyond the controversial moment, critics have been largely positive about the new season, praising tighter pacing and stronger performances compared to Season 2, alongside an apparently massive naval battle sequence. The premiere also killed off a major character, adding more fuel to an already explosive episode.
New episodes drop weekly on Sunday nights, building toward the season finale in August.
