K-Pop Empire in Turmoil: South Korean Police Seek Arrest Warrant for HYBE Billionaire Founder Bang Si-Hyuk Over Massive Investor Fraud Scheme

The global music landscape is witnessing a seismic corporate earthquake as South Korean authorities escalate their investigation into Bang Si-Hyuk, the billionaire music mogul and visionary founder of HYBE, the powerhouse agency behind K-pop juggernauts BTS. On April 21, 2026, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency confirmed it had formally asked prosecutors to request a court warrant for Bang’s arrest. The deeply influential executive is currently at the center of an expansive criminal probe involving allegations of an investor fraud scheme that allegedly netted him over $100 million. For a man credited with bringing Korean pop music to unprecedented global dominance, the looming threat of detention marks a staggering fall from grace and throws the future of several major music acts into sudden uncertainty.

The allegations against Bang trace back to the critical months leading up to HYBE’s blockbuster initial public offering (IPO) in 2020. According to Seoul investigators, Bang deliberately misled early investors in 2019 by falsely claiming the company (then known as Big Hit Entertainment) had no immediate plans to go public. This alleged misinformation reportedly panicked investors into prematurely selling their shares to a specific private equity fund with deep ties to Bang. Police believe this orchestrated maneuver allowed the fund to acquire the equity at a massive discount, resulting in a lucrative side deal that promised Bang 30 percent of the post-IPO stock sale profits—a staggering windfall of roughly 200 billion won (approximately $129 to $185 million CAD). Bang has been actively barred from leaving South Korea since August of last year while the 16-month investigation unfolded.

The timing of this legal crisis could not be worse for HYBE’s public relations or its flagship artists. The arrest warrant request arrives exactly as BTS attempts a massive 2026 comeback. Following a nearly four-year hiatus to complete South Korea’s mandatory military service, the seven members recently reunited for a massive free concert in Seoul and are preparing to kick off a highly anticipated series of U.S. stadium events, beginning in Tampa, Florida, later this month. Furthermore, this financial scandal compounds an already turbulent era for HYBE, which spent much of the past two years battling internal civil wars—most notably a bitter, highly publicized legal and public relations feud with star producer Min Hee-Jin over the management and creative control of the hit girl group NewJeans. In response to the police escalation, Bang’s legal counsel released a statement expressing deep regret over the arrest warrant request despite their “full and consistent cooperation,” promising to clear his name through the legal process.
