Five days. That’s how long fans have to wait before Olivia Rodrigo’s third studio album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, arrives on June 12 via Geffen Records. And if Saturday night’s surprise Primavera Sound performance is any indication, the wait is absolutely going to be worth it.

The album has been one of the most meticulously rolled out releases of the year. It started with a mysterious pink mural appearing in Los Angeles in March, followed by the official announcement on April 2, then the synth-pop lead single “Drop Dead” (released April 17 with a fever-dream music video shot at Versailles), and then the second single “The Cure” on May 22. The latter is a tribute to one of her musical heroes — Robert Smith of The Cure — whose influence is all over this project.

The album’s full 13-track list was shared in late May and divided into two acts: the first half titled “you seem pretty sad” and the second half “for a girl so in love.” Rodrigo described the record to British Vogue as full of sad love songs shaped significantly by time she spent in London. “I’ve found a lot of inspiration from being in London,” she said. “It has a lot of songs that are London vibes.”

What makes this release feel genuinely different from Sour and Guts is the depth of the collaborations and artistic influences baked into it. The Robert Smith duet, “What’s Wrong With Me,” world-premiered at Primavera just hours ago and is already being called the album’s emotional centerpiece. It’s the first feature Rodrigo has ever included on a studio album.

The 22-year-old three-time Grammy winner isn’t just following up a successful album — she’s building an era.
