Brad Pitt and a Dog vs. the Alaskan Wilderness — Heart of the Beast Gets a September Release Date

Paramount officially confirmed today that Brad Pitt's survival thriller Heart of the Beast — directed by Fury's David Ayer — hits theaters September 25, 2026. The dog is apparently the emotional co-lead.

Brad Pitt had one of the best years in recent memory with last summer’s F1, which picked up four Academy Award nominations and confirmed he remains one of the few true movie stars who can still open a film purely on name recognition alone. His next project is a very different kind of ride.

Paramount Pictures confirmed on Wednesday that Heart of the Beast will release in theaters on September 25, 2026. The survival thriller is directed by David Ayer and stars Pitt as a former Army Special Forces soldier who, alongside his retired combat dog, battles to survive after a plane crash deep in the Alaskan wilderness. J.K. Simmons and Anna Lambe round out the cast.

The film reunites Pitt and Ayer for the first time since their 2014 World War II drama Fury, which remains a high point for both of them. Written by Cameron Alexander, the project first surfaced on a list of notable unproduced screenplays back in 2017 before finally making it to production.

Footage shown at CinemaCon last month previewed the film’s emotional core: Pitt’s character assures his dog after their crash — “I’m gonna get you home. We’re just going to have to do this the hard way” — before the preview showed their harrowing attempt to cross a river, dangerous encounters with wildlife, and the kind of man-and-his-dog bond that historically makes audiences weep without warning.

Early CinemaCon reactions compared it favourably to Fury, which is exactly the kind of buzz Paramount wants heading into a competitive September weekend. The film opens against DreamWorks’ Forgotten Island and a re-release of Avengers: Endgame. Given the subject matter — a veteran, a dog, and survival against the odds — this one feels positioned as a genuine awards-season conversation starter.
