The 15th annual Pacific Arts Spring Showcase officially began today at UltraStar Cinemas Mission Valley, promising a three-day celebration of Asian and Asian American film. The festival opened with The Road to Sydney, a deeply affecting documentary by filmmaker Benito Bautista that profiles dance artist Sydney Loyola. The film provides an intimate look at Loyola’s experience navigating discrimination following gender-affirmation surgery, positioning the festival as a space for important social dialogue.

In a climate where discussions surrounding queer and trans rights are increasingly at the forefront of pop culture, the festival’s curators have purposefully selected works that challenge traditional narratives. Alongside the opening film, the showcase includes screenings of landmark international cinema, such as the Iranian classic Bashu, the Little Stranger, which explores themes of war and displacement. By bridging the gap between artistic expression and social commentary, the Pac Arts Spring Showcase continues to play a vital role in providing a platform for voices that are often underrepresented in mainstream Hollywood distributions.
